“Whites Can’t Invent Anything!” – Joy Reid Says White People Stole Ideas and Inventions From Blacks (VIDEO)

Former MSNBC host Joy Reid, who was let go from her role on The ReidOut in February, made headlines again following a recent conversation with political commentator Wajahat Ali. During the discussion, Reid made pointed remarks about cultural appropriation and the historical contributions of Black Americans to American music.

Reid argued that many influential music genres—including country, hip-hop, R&B, jazz, and rock and roll—have roots in Black culture. She criticized the tendency to label white artists as pioneers in genres largely shaped by Black musicians.

“We Black folk gave y’all country music, hip-hop, R&B, jazz, rock and roll. They couldn’t even invent that,” Reid said, referencing how the music industry has often elevated white performers. She took aim at the legacy of Elvis Presley, suggesting that his success was built on work originally created by Black artists. “They have to call a white man ‘The King’ because they couldn’t make rock and roll,” she said. “His main song was stolen from an overweight Black woman,” she added, referring to Presley’s hit Hound Dog, originally recorded by Big Mama Thornton.

Ali appeared to agree with Reid’s points during the exchange, nodding in response.

The remarks have sparked debate online, with some criticizing Reid’s tone, while others have defended her comments as a critique of systemic appropriation and erasure in American cultural history.
