A powerful earthquake struck southern Japan on Tuesday, injuring dozens of people, damaging buildings and disrupting electricity and transportation across parts of Kyushu.

The Japan Meteorological Agency measured the earthquake at magnitude 7.1, while the U.S. Geological Survey revised its initial estimate to magnitude 6.8. The shallow quake struck Kumamoto Prefecture shortly before 4:30 p.m. local time.

One of the most seriously damaged buildings was an Aeon shopping mall in Kashima, where part of the second floor collapsed. Authorities said people were trapped inside, and emergency crews began search-and-rescue operations. An explosion was also reported at the mall following the earthquake, although its cause was not immediately confirmed.

At least 50 people were reported injured across the affected region as officials continued assessing the damage. Fires, collapsed buildings and damage to roads and bridges were also reported. Associated Press

The earthquake knocked out power to tens of thousands of homes and disrupted cellular service in some areas. Kumamoto Airport closed its runway, forcing airlines to cancel or divert flights, while local and high-speed train services were suspended.

The Japan Meteorological Agency temporarily issued a tsunami advisory for coastal areas along the Ariake and Yatsushiro seas, warning that waves could reach approximately 3 feet. The advisory was later lifted after no significant tsunami was detected.

Japan’s Nuclear Regulation Authority reported no abnormalities at nuclear facilities in the region.

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi established an emergency response team and urged residents to protect themselves by moving to safe locations. She said authorities had received reports of injuries, fires, power outages and structural damage.

Officials warned that additional strong earthquakes could strike during the coming week. Residents were also advised to remain alert for landslides and stay away from damaged buildings while emergency inspections and rescue operations continued. Reuters
