My 82-year-old friend is now very interested in men
DEAR ABBY:
I am concerned about a dear friend who has a diagnosis of mild dementia. She has no family nearby; her closest relatives live four hours away, and contact with them is minimal. She was widowed 40 years ago and has never dated, always saying she had no interest in pursuing a relationship. She is deeply involved in our community and has a wide, varied circle of friends.
My concern is that, while she has always been active in events — the arts, music, adult education classes — she is now VERY interested in men. She has spoken to me about her desire for a sexual relationship. She’s 82.
I am at a loss about what to tell her and worried about the possible consequences if she does find a man willing and able. I feel strongly that this sudden desire represents a personality change caused by her dementia.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
