A 34-year-old Texas man was found dead outside a Houston steakhouse after employees allegedly mistook him for a homeless person and failed to seek medical assistance, according to his family.
Jessie Mobley Jr. had reportedly fallen asleep after a meal at KFFO Afro Steakhouse on August 7. Rather than calling emergency services, restaurant staff moved him outside and left him propped up with his belongings, believing he was a passed-out vagrant, according to the Houston Police Department.
Mobley was discovered the following morning by a student from the Behind the Chair Institute, a nearby beauty school, and was pronounced dead by first responders around 9 a.m. outside the Eldridge/West Oaks neighborhood strip mall.
Mobley lived with his aunt, Charlene Fogg-Drake, who expressed outrage over how her nephew was treated. “Why didn’t you call 911? I feel like people need to be accountable for it, I really do,” she told the Houston Chronicle.
The owners of the steakhouse declined to comment, and the cause of death has not yet been determined as officials await autopsy results.
Mobley’s parents, Renee and Jessie Mobley Sr., are now mourning the loss of a third child. They questioned why no one at the restaurant intervened or sought help. “We just think if somebody had gotten him some help instead of putting him on the sidewalk — called 911 if nothing else. If you don’t know what’s wrong with someone, you shouldn’t assume,” Renee said.

The family also shared the emotional and physical toll the tragedy has taken. Jessie Sr., known affectionately as “Big Jessie,” has endured 13 heart attacks, two strokes, and multiple surgeries in recent years. He described the experience of losing another child as devastating. “There’s no aging gracefully after losing a child,” he said, noting he has lost 60 pounds.
The parents also recounted the distressing condition in which they saw their son’s body. “The way we seen him was horrible. He has turned purple. There were signs of decay,” Renee said. Mobley was cremated in Houston, and his ashes were taken back to his family’s home in Spring, about 25 miles north.
Fogg-Drake said she had created a small memorial with flowers and candles outside the restaurant several times since Mobley’s death, but it has repeatedly been removed. She had been planning a special dinner to celebrate his upcoming 35th birthday—just a week away—before his unexpected passing.
