A Florida man accused of fatally shooting his sister earlier this year could face the death penalty if convicted, prosecutors announced Monday.
Pedro Pablo Linares, 57, was arrested in July in connection with the death of his sister, 60-year-old Beatriz Linares-Calamita. According to police, the fatal shooting took place on April 4 at her workplace in Miami, just weeks after she reportedly evicted him from their mother’s home.
An arrest warrant obtained by Law&Crime states that Linares-Calamita asked her brother to leave their mother’s residence due to his failure to contribute financially or provide care. Following the eviction, Linares allegedly began showing up at her home without warning.
Surveillance footage from a Ring camera at Linares-Calamita’s workplace shows Linares first arriving around 4:59 p.m., wearing blue gloves and a surgical mask. He attempted to enter the building but was unsuccessful.
Police say he returned at 5:35 p.m., still wearing the gloves and mask. This time, the door was open. According to the arrest warrant, Linares entered the building “with a firearm in his hand” and shot his sister multiple times at close range before fleeing the scene.
Linares was later identified by Linares-Calamita’s husband and daughter, who recognized him from still images captured by the surveillance camera.
After the shooting, Linares fled the state and was eventually apprehended in Louisiana on July 15. He has been charged with first-degree murder, armed burglary, and assault. A grand jury formally indicted him on September 3.
The Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office announced it will seek the death penalty. Linares is scheduled to appear in court on October 1.
