California Man Pleads Guilty to Killing Four People and Setting Home on Fire After Boyfriend Broke Up With Him

A 21-year-old queer from California pleaded guilty on August 13 to killing four people and setting their home on fire in connection with the 2024 Lancaster quadruple murder and house fire. The accused, identified as Miguel Diego Sandoval, pleaded guilty to four counts of first-degree murder, along with charges involving attempted murder, first-degree residential burglary, arson of an inhabited structure, three counts of animal cruelty, two counts of child abuse, and destroying or concealing evidence.

Sandoval is set to be sentenced on November 17, 2026. The prosecution has agreed to a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. The Lancaster quadruple murder took place on November 16, 2024. According to Law and Crime, Sandoval’s then-boyfriend had broken up with him, which angered him and became the reason for committing the crime.

Sandoval entered his ex-boyfriend Dillon Maquindang’s house at around 1:30 a.m. while everyone was asleep. He then gunned down four people in the house. However, to Sandoval’s dismay, none of the four individuals was his ex-boyfriend. He instead killed Maquindang’s siblings, Janvi Maquindang, 21, and Christine Aca-ac, 25, and their partners, Edwin Garcia, 24, and Matthew Montebello, 21.

“The defendant was jilted when he broke up with his boyfriend and then did something unimaginable when he killed four innocent people,” Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman said. “This was a calculated act of violence that left a void for the victims’ families that can never be filled. Rest assured this guilty plea will result in a lifetime prison sentence.”

Following the killings, Sandoval set the house on fire, which also killed the family dog. A 16-year-old girl who was also present in the house survived the ordeal by locking herself in the bedroom. When authorities arrived at the scene, she was rescued from the burning building.

“You’re too pathetic to deal with your own emotions that you had to plan something as miserable as this,” the 16-year-old said during Sandoval’s hearing. Dillon Maquindang, the person because of whom Sandoval committed the killings, also spoke about the incident.

“You changed my life in ways I never asked for. But you did not take away my ability to live, to love, and to find happiness again,” Dillon said during a court hearing for Miguel Diego Sandoval. “I hate that I’m giving you this much of my energy today. … My family deserves to be remembered for who they were, not how they died.”
