Illegal immigrant trucker with California CDL tries to pass — crosses into oncoming traffic, kills 50-year-old woman
A truck driver is facing an aggravated vehicular homicide charge after authorities say he crossed into oncoming traffic while trying to pass another vehicle and caused a fatal head-on crash in Ohio. The collision happened Sept. 2 near Highway 68 and Hamer Road in Pleasant Township, Brown County. Police said Manjit Singh moved into the opposite lane while attempting to pass and collided head-on with a car driven by 50-year-old Brenda Watson, who died at the scene.
Singh was arrested at the scene and charged with aggravated vehicular homicide. The Department of Homeland Security said Singh is an Indian national who entered the United States illegally through Arizona in October 2023 and was later released by Border Patrol. DHS also said he received work authorization in August 2024 and was issued a commercial driver’s license by California. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement lodged a detainer with the Brown County Jail the day after his arrest.
Witnesses described the crash as violent and said Singh appeared to be traveling at excessive speed before the collision. One woman who was riding in the vehicle Singh was attempting to pass said she could see the crash developing and had her phone ready to call 911. She later described Watson’s vehicle lifting into the air before coming back down amid smoke. Another witness said Singh appeared to have enough time and space to move back into the northbound lane before the impact.
DHS said the detainer requests that local authorities notify ICE before Singh is released so federal immigration officials can take custody of him. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin criticized the circumstances that allowed Singh to remain in the country and obtain a CDL, while expressing condolences to Watson’s family. The criminal charge against Singh remains pending, and the allegations have not yet been proven in court.
