Three inmates sentenced to life behind bars for murdering child killer in 5-minute prison attack

Three British prisoners were sentenced on Friday to life in prison without the possibility of release after being convicted of murdering a fellow inmate—a convicted child killer—inside a maximum-security facility.

Mark Fellows, 45, Lee Newell, 57, and David Taylor, 64, stormed the cell of 33-year-old Kyle Bevan at HMP Wakefield in northern England in November 2024, according to BBC-obtained surveillance footage.

The attack lasted about four and a half minutes before the trio left the cell.

Bevan, who was serving a life sentence for the 2020 murder of his 2-year-old stepdaughter, Lola James, was later found with over 25 stab and slash wounds. He had bled to death in his cell, though his body wasn’t discovered until a morning roll call the next day.

At Leeds Crown Court, all three were given whole-life orders—the most severe penalty in the UK justice system, meaning no chance of parole. Justice McGowan emphasized that the men celebrated after the killing and that news of Bevan’s death quickly circulated through the prison.

She noted they specifically targeted him because of his conviction for killing a child. “Acting together, you inflicted more than 25 wounds, several of which were fatal,” she said. “His final moments would have been terrifying.”

She added that sentencing someone for a third murder was unprecedented in her experience—yet applied to two of the three defendants.

Prosecutors explained that Bevan was attacked with improvised weapons, including a blade made from metal taken from a television. After the stabbing, the men placed his body in bed to make it seem as if he were sleeping.

In addition to Bevan’s murder, Taylor received a whole-life order for the 2022 murder of 24-year-old Alisha Apostoloff-Boyarin and the attempted murder of a police officer.

Apostoloff-Boyarin vanished after traveling from Manchester to Durham, and Taylor admitted to killing her earlier this year but has not disclosed the location of her remains. During a prison interview in which he claimed to have information about her disappearance, Taylor stabbed Greater Manchester detective Darren Bratby; the officer survived and fully recovered.

Fellows, nicknamed “The Iceman,” was already serving a whole-life sentence for two prior gang-related killings. Newell was also already serving such a sentence and had previously killed another inmate convicted of murdering a child in 2013.

Whole-life orders are rare, with only around 75 currently in effect across England and Wales, typically reserved for the most heinous crimes.
