Five Shot, Including Three University of Iowa Students, After Massive Late-Night Brawl Erupts into Gunfire in Iowa City, Police Seek Help Identifying Suspects

Five people were injured by gunfire early Sunday morning after a large altercation turned violent in downtown Iowa City near the University of Iowa campus.

The incident happened at about 1:46 a.m. in the city’s busy pedestrian mall area, a well-known nightlife hub lined with bars and restaurants just a short distance from the university. Police were initially called to the scene for reports of a large physical fight involving several men. As officers arrived, they encountered the disturbance and then heard multiple gunshots break out.

People in the area quickly ran for safety as the situation escalated.

Authorities have confirmed that five individuals were shot. Among them, three are students at the University of Iowa. One person remains in critical condition, while the other four victims are listed as stable. All five were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.

As of Sunday afternoon, no arrests had been made.

The Iowa City Police Department is continuing its investigation and has released images of five individuals identified as persons of interest connected to the shooting. Officials are asking the public for help in identifying them or providing any relevant video or information.

University of Iowa President Barb Wilson issued a message to students and staff expressing concern and support, noting that three students were among those injured. She said the university is working closely with local law enforcement and emphasized the importance of relying on official updates as the investigation continues. She also urged the campus community to support one another during what she described as a difficult time.
