Flavors of the Fifty- West Virginia
West Virginia’s Pepperoni Roll
At TNBD, we’re continuing our series featuring a recipe from a different U.S. state every day! Today’s stop is West Virginia, home of the iconic Pepperoni Roll.
The Pepperoni Roll is a simple yet irresistible baked bread roll stuffed with pepperoni. Traditionally made with soft white bread dough wrapped around sticks or slices of pepperoni, the roll bakes until the bread turns golden brown and the pepperoni releases its flavorful oils into the dough. Some variations include mozzarella cheese, spicy pepperoni, or even peppers, but the classic version keeps it wonderfully straightforward, letting the rich, savory pepperoni flavor soak into the bread.
Perfect for lunch, road trips, or a quick snack, Pepperoni Rolls are portable, satisfying, and packed with bold flavor—Appalachian comfort food at its finest.
The Pepperoni Roll traces its origins to north-central West Virginia, particularly around the city of Fairmont, in the early 20th century. Italian immigrants who came to the region to work in the coal mines brought their love of cured meats and bread with them. In the 1920s, baker Giuseppe “Joseph” Argiro of the Country Club Bakery is widely credited with creating the Pepperoni Roll. He designed it specifically as a convenient meal for coal miners who needed food that was hearty, non-perishable, and easy to carry into the mines.
Because pepperoni is a cured meat, it didn’t spoil quickly, and baking it inside the bread allowed the flavorful oils to seep into the dough—creating the signature taste that made the roll so popular. Miners could simply pack one in their lunch pails and eat it underground without needing utensils.
Over time, the Pepperoni Roll spread beyond mining communities and became a beloved staple across West Virginia. Today it can be found in bakeries, convenience stores, school cafeterias, and family kitchens throughout the state. In fact, it’s so iconic that it was officially recognized as the state food of West Virginia in 2021.
From coal miners’ lunch pails to modern bakeries and home kitchens, the Pepperoni Roll remains a proud symbol of West Virginia’s immigrant heritage and hardworking spirit—one warm, savory bite at a time.
