President Trump may not drink alcohol, but White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles described him as having what she called an “alcoholic’s personality,” according to a new Vanity Fair profile that has drawn significant attention inside Washington.

The lengthy profile, written by Chris Whipple and based on interviews conducted over the past year, offers a rare and unusually candid look at Wiles, one of the most powerful yet low-profile figures in the administration. The story was published in two parts. Wiles has since criticized the article, calling it a “hit piece” and saying her comments were taken out of context.

Among the remarks highlighted in the piece, Wiles said President Trump operates with an unshakable belief that there is “nothing he can’t do,” adding that his personality is marked by an exaggerated confidence she likened to that of high-functioning alcoholics, despite his abstinence from drinking.

Wiles pushed back on the idea that President Trump is pursuing revenge against political opponents, saying he is not “on a retribution tour.” However, when asked about the prosecution of New York Attorney General Letitia James over alleged mortgage fraud, she acknowledged that it “might be the one retribution.” In other cases, she said, actions could appear retaliatory and might occasionally include an element of retribution, adding, “Who would blame him? Not me.”

She also said President Trump was “wrong” in his claims that the Jeffrey Epstein files incriminate former President Bill Clinton.

The profile includes pointed comments about several other prominent figures. Wiles described Vice President JD Vance as having been a “conspiracy theorist for a decade.” She referred to Elon Musk as an “avowed ketamine user” and “an odd, odd duck,” while also saying she was “aghast” at his role in efforts that crippled the U.S. Agency for International Development.

Wiles criticized Attorney General Pam Bondi’s early handling of the Epstein files, saying Bondi failed to recognize how intensely a specific group of people cared about the issue. She said Bondi initially provided “binders full of nothingness” and later suggested a client list existed when, according to Wiles, it did not.

She also labeled Russell Vought, head of the Office of Management and Budget and a contributor to the Project 2025 policy blueprint, “a right-wing absolute zealot.”

After publication, Wiles issued a public response condemning the article.

“The article published early this morning is a disingenuously framed hit piece on me and the finest President, White House staff, and Cabinet in history,” Wiles wrote. “Significant context was disregarded, and much of what was said about the team and the President was left out to create an overwhelmingly chaotic and negative narrative.”
