Federal authorities have arrested Brian Cole, a 30-year-old resident of Woodbridge, Virginia, in connection with the pipe bombs discovered near the RNC and DNC headquarters on January 5, 2021. The FBI has previously released surveillance footage that they say shows the suspect placing one of the devices outside the DNC.
According to reporting from The Gateway Pundit and The Daily Wire, Cole had been involved in the bail-bond industry for several years, working with his father under different company names, including StateWide Bonding, Inc. Public records cited by The Daily Wire indicate that StateWide Bonding handled immigration-related bonds, including for clients who were in the country illegally.
The Daily Wire also reports that StateWide Bonding filed a 2020 lawsuit against the Trump administration’s Department of Homeland Security, alleging improper treatment of immigrants. In November 2020, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit upheld a previous decision dismissing the company’s claims.
The outlet further notes that StateWide Bonding shared an address with “Free U Bonds,” which Cole lists on his LinkedIn profile, and that he was identified as the company’s owner in a legal dispute in Colorado concerning immigration bonds.
After the period in which the appeals court dismissed the lawsuit, Cole continued to work publicly in the bail-bond field. In November 2021, he appeared at a press conference alongside attorney Benjamin Crump, alleging that Rutherford County Assistant District Attorney John Zimmerman had unfairly targeted his business and other minority-owned companies. Cole claimed Zimmerman had defamed him and improperly contacted his insurance provider. Crump supported Cole’s allegations, stating that comments directed at Cole were inappropriate and suggesting that some believed the criticism carried racial undertones.
The Biden administration has not commented publicly on the newly reported details surrounding Cole’s past legal disputes or business activities. The investigation into the January 6–related pipe bombs remains ongoing, and authorities have not released additional information about potential motives.
