A Mississippi man will serve 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to second-degree murder in the shooting death of his father, following what authorities describe as a long history of family conflict.

On Friday, 27-year-old Jeffrey Young Jr. admitted to killing his 57-year-old father, Jeffrey Young Sr., during a dispute at their home on Castle Road in Warren County’s Camelot Estates, just south of Vicksburg. The incident occurred in July 2022, and the elder Young was found dead from gunshot wounds in his front yard.

Judge Toni Terrett of the 9th District Circuit Court sentenced Young Jr. to 40 years in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections, with 10 years required to be served.

According to local reports, including from ABC affiliate WAPT and Magnolia State Live, the confrontation began over car speakers and quickly escalated. Sheriff Martin Pace described it as a brief argument preceding the shooting.

During the hearing, Young Jr. told the court that his father struggled with alcohol and frequently became violent. “He would go in a rage and get violent every day,” he said, according to the Vicksburg Daily NewsI’m sorry, and he was my father, but that day he just pushed me too far.

The defendant admitted to firing multiple shots. His defense highlighted a pattern of abuse, noting that law enforcement had responded to the residence multiple times due to incidents involving the victim.

Prosecutors countered by emphasizing that Young Sr. had his back turned when shot and posed no immediate threat. They also pointed out that Young Jr. retrieved the firearm from his room, urging the court to impose the harshest penalty.

Testimony painted a complex picture of the victim. A cousin recalled an incident where Young Sr., while intoxicated at a Kroger, slammed Young Jr. against a wall and assaulted him. The defendants third-grade teacher said she often saw Young Sr. drinking at school events. A family friend described him as regularly under the influence and abusive toward his wife and son.

Following the shooting, Tracie Young, 59 and the victim’s wife, was charged with being an accessory after the fact for allegedly lying to investigators about her sonrole.

Still, not everyone viewed the victim solely through the lens of his flaws. His sister defended his character, stating, “My brother was a loving and caring person. I still love my nephew, but I want him to get the max for the murder of my brother.
