Rapper Gets 14 Years in Prison for Funneling Millions of Dollars in Illegal Campaign Contributions to Obama in 2012
Grammy-winning rapper Prakazrel “Pras” Michel of the Fugees was sentenced Thursday to 14 years in federal prison after being convicted of illegally funneling millions of dollars in foreign contributions to former President Barack Obama’s 2012 reelection campaign.
Michel, 52, did not address the court before U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly handed down the sentence. In April 2023, a federal jury in Washington, D.C., found him guilty on 10 counts, including conspiracy and acting as an unregistered agent of a foreign government. The trial included testimony from actor Leonardo DiCaprio and former Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

Prosecutors had argued for a life sentence, saying Michel “betrayed his country for money” and “lied unapologetically and unrelentingly to carry out his schemes.” They stated that his punishment should reflect the “breadth and depth of his crimes, his indifference to the risks to his country, and the magnitude of his greed.”
Defense attorney Peter Zeidenberg described the 14-year sentence as “completely disproportionate to the offense” and confirmed that Michel plans to appeal.
Even if the appeal moves forward, the process could take years, meaning Michel is likely to remain in prison for a significant period.
Leftists claim election crimes are largely a myth. As usual, they’re total liars.

Obama’s campaign faced allegations of receiving illegal contributions in 2008 as well, though no charges resulted from that earlier period.
Observers have noted that media coverage of the case has been more muted than it might be if a similar case involved the current president, Donald Trump, highlighting ongoing differences in political and media attention.
