A Wisconsin mother has pleaded guilty after admitting she forced her 12-year-old son to walk alone along a busy highway following an argument about his grades.
Flor Escalante, 44, faced charges of child abandonment and child neglect stemming from the incident, which occurred a year ago. Court records show she entered a guilty plea on Thursday to the abandonment charge, while the judge dismissed the neglect charge. She received a sentence of two years’ probation.
The confrontation happened on November 8, 2024, as Escalante was driving her son to a Sylvan Learning Center in Brookfield. After their argument escalated, she pulled over on the shoulder of I-94 and told him to get out of the vehicle. The boy was left roughly two miles from his destination in 50-degree weather without proper clothing, and heavy traffic was passing nearby at highway speeds.
Multiple motorists called 911 after seeing “a crying boy, around 10 to 12 years old,” walking close to the interstate and unable to provide his parents’ names. Officers eventually located him and transported him safely to the learning center, where Escalante was waiting.
Escalante told police she felt her son didn’t value her efforts and said she made him walk so he could “understand what labor is.” She claimed she tried to return for him but couldn’t locate him, assuming police would bring him to her at the learning center.
