Five individuals in Texas have become the first people in the United States to be convicted on terrorism-related charges tied to involvement with the far-left group Antifa.

President Trump designated Antifa as a terrorist organization in September, and the charges against these five defendants were filed the following month. The case centers on an attack that occurred on July 4 at a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Alvarado, Texas.

According to reporting by Andy Ngo at The Post Millennial, the defendants—Seth Sikes, Joy Abigail Gibson, Lynette Read Sharp, Nathan Baumann, and John Phillip Thomas—admitted in federal plea agreements that they were members of an organized Antifa cell. The incident involved a coordinated ambush on the Prairieland ICE facility, during which a police officer was shot in the neck and other officers were fired upon.

Each defendant pleaded guilty to one count of providing material support to terrorists. As part of their plea deals, which cap potential prison time at 15 years (although they initially faced decades), the individuals agreed to a series of stipulated facts outlining their roles in the attack.

Court documents indicate that several of the defendants acknowledged planning beginning on July 3 and continuing into July 4, with the intent to provide resources and personnel for acts they understood to be terrorism. They admitted these actions were meant to influence or retaliate against government conduct through intimidation or coercion.

Acting U.S. Attorney Nancy E. Larson issued a statement emphasizing the significance of the case.

“This is the first indictment in the country against a group of violent Antifa cell members,” she said. “The charges…address the vicious attack perpetrated by an anti-ICE, anti-law enforcement, anti-government, anarchist group. I applaud the tenacious work of the FBI, ICE, our state and local law enforcement partners, and the prosecutors and staff in my office… We are firm in our resolve to protect our law enforcement officers and federal facilities against organized domestic terrorist cells.”

The case marks a notable moment in federal efforts to address violent extremist activity associated with Antifa.
