Passengers aboard a Delta flight departing from Portland International Airport were taken off the aircraft Thursday after a traveler succeeded in bringing a meat cleaver past security and onto the plane, according to Oregon Live. The flight, which was headed to Salt Lake City, triggered immediate concern and led the Transportation Security Administration to launch a review of the security lapse.
“We take this matter very seriously,” TSA spokesperson Jessica Mayle said, noting that the agency is investigating how the weapon made it through screening. She said potential corrective steps could include additional training for security personnel. Delta employees discovered the cleaver during boarding and notified authorities right away.
As a precaution, all passengers were asked to exit the plane and go through security screening again. Port of Portland police responded, though no arrests were made. Authorities have not yet determined why the passenger was carrying the cleaver, a tool commonly used for cutting through meat and bone, CNN reported. The incident comes just as Portland International Airport gears up for the busy Thanksgiving travel season.
