British lawmakers are calling for the release of 15 Gentoo penguins held at Sea Life London Aquarium, sparking a heated debate over animal welfare in one of the city’s most popular tourist attractions.

Critics argue that the black-and-white birds are confined to an enclosure with limited access to natural light and fresh air, and claim the water in their habitat is too shallow. Dozens of Members of Parliament have signed a letter to Environment Secretary Emma Reynolds urging her to “consider whether the penguins should be relocated to a more suitable facility better aligned with their behavioral, ecological and physiological needs,” NBC reports. Parliament member David Taylor posted on X: “Abusing animals for money is un-British.”

The “Free the 15!” campaign, launched in February 2024 by Freedom for Animals, one of the UK’s longest-running animal protection charities, seeks to raise awareness about the welfare of the Gentoo penguins, recognizable by their bright red-orange beaks, white feather caps, and peach-colored feet. The organization claims the penguins are “imprisoned in a windowless basement beneath London” and warns that they could spend their entire lives in captivity unless relocated.

Protesters gathered outside the aquarium on Oct. 19, highlighting the debate over whether the enclosure, with its rocks and artificial snow cliffs, truly meets the animals’ needs.

Merlin Entertainments, which owns Sea Life London Aquarium, defended the habitat, saying it meets UK standards for modern zoo practice. In a statement to NBC, the company said the enclosure is “carefully designed to reflect important elements of the penguins’ natural environment as closely as possible to ensure good health, including climate-controlled temperature and filtered fresh air.”

The controversy continues as lawmakers and activists push for changes to ensure the penguins’ well-being, keeping the debate over animal ethics in the spotlight.
