Nancy Pelosi is stepping down. The longtime House speaker announced Thursday that she will not seek reelection, bringing an end to a remarkable political career that saw her become the first woman to hold the speaker’s gavel and one of the most influential figures in American politics, according to the AP.
“I will not be seeking reelection to Congress,” Pelosi, who has represented San Francisco for nearly 40 years, said in a video address to voters.
Appearing optimistic and forward-looking, Pelosi reflected on her decades of accomplishments while encouraging her city to stay engaged. “My message to the city I love is this: San Francisco, know your power,” she said. “We have always led the way. And now we must continue to do so by remaining full participants in our democracy and fighting for the American ideals we hold dear.”
Pelosi will serve out the remainder of her term, leaving a legacy that has reshaped both her city and the nation’s political landscape.
