A German nurse has been sentenced to life in prison for killing 10 patients and attempting to murder 27 others, prosecutors said. The 44-year-old palliative care worker, whose name has not been released, carried out the crimes at a hospital in Wuerselen, western Germany, between December 2023 and May 2024.

The Aachen court ruled that he will not be eligible for release after 15 years, as is normally possible in Germany, due to the “particular severity of guilt,” CBS News reports.

Authorities said the nurse injected mostly elderly patients with lethal doses of morphine and midazolam. Prosecutors described him as lacking empathy and motivation, noting that he showed no remorse during the trial and was diagnosed with a personality disorder. They claimed he became frustrated when assigned patients who required extra care.

The nurse had been employed at the Wuerselen hospital since 2020. Authorities have exhumed bodies to investigate the possibility of additional victims, and further charges may follow.
