Fueling the flames Crucial Russian oil refinery ignited during Ukrainian drone assault
A major Russian oil refinery, responsible for roughly 30% of the country’s gasoline consumption, was set ablaze in an overnight drone attack by Ukrainian forces, Kyiv announced.
The Lukoil refinery in Nizhny Novgorod Oblast came under assault Tuesday night as more than 50 Ukrainian drones targeted the facility, according to Ukraine’s General Staff. Footage circulating on Telegram shows the refinery engulfed in flames, striking one of Moscow’s largest energy hubs—facilities that have increasingly become targets aimed at limiting Russia’s war capabilities.

The Lukoil refinery processes about 17 million tons of crude oil annually, supplying nearly a third of Russia’s petrol needs. Ukrainian intelligence claimed the refinery also provided fuel for Russian military operations. While Russian officials have not formally commented on the attack, regional governor Gleb Nikitin said at least 20 Ukrainian drones were intercepted over Kstovo, the town where the refinery is located.
Kyiv has regularly targeted Russian oil infrastructure over the past year. Ukraine’s Security Service estimates it has carried out close to 160 successful strikes against Russian oil facilities in 2025 alone, aiming to hit Moscow’s defense budget and create economic pressure on consumers. Security Service head Vasyl Maliuk recently stated that oil extraction and refining account for around 90% of Russia’s defense budget.

In addition to the Lukoil refinery, Ukraine reported “considerable damage” at a petrochemical plant in Bashkortostan. Explosions were reported at the Sterlitamak chemical plant, with Mayor Emil Shaimardanov saying a water purification facility was destroyed. Ukraine’s General Staff noted that the plant produces components for aviation kerosene, a key resource for Russia’s air force.
