Pope Leo XIV is intensifying his quiet yet deliberate critique of President Trump’s deportation policies.
Elected in May as the first-ever American Pope, Leo has raised concerns about the administration’s efforts to carry out mass deportations of undocumented immigrants.
“Many people who have lived here for years without causing any problems have been deeply affected by what’s happening now,” the Pope said.
He stressed the importance of attending to the spiritual needs of detainees, urging authorities to allow pastoral workers access. “Often, these individuals have been separated from their families for long periods. Their spiritual well-being should not be overlooked,” he added.

On Wednesday, Leo also commented on recent U.S. airstrikes against Venezuelan drug vessels and speculation about potential action to remove Nicolás Maduro from power. “I believe violence never brings victory,” he said. “Dialogue and fair solutions are essential to resolving conflicts within nations.”
Though less overtly political than his predecessor, Pope Francis, Leo has repeatedly offered pointed critiques of Trump and the Republican Party’s platform. He recently encouraged pilgrims to embrace the 10 million undocumented immigrants who entered the U.S. under President Joe Biden, calling it a “new missionary age.”
“We should welcome them as brothers and sisters, offering consolation and hope,” he said. “In communities with ancient Christian traditions, the presence of people from around the world should be seen as an opportunity to renew and enrich the Church.”

Last month, Leo also made headlines by blessing a block of ice as part of his commitment to addressing climate change. “Citizens must participate actively in political decision-making at all levels,” he said. “Only then can we work to mitigate environmental damage.”
