CBS LA Producers Scramble as Suspect Killed During Live Highway Police Chase: ‘Oh No!’

CBS Los Angeles experienced a shocking moment Monday night when a live freeway chase ended in tragedy, leaving anchors Suzie Suh and Juan Fernandez visibly stunned in the studio.

The pursuit began when a suspect driving a stolen white van sped through downtown Los Angeles, cutting through Chinatown and heading north toward Pasadena. Officers followed the vehicle down the 110 Freeway, where the suspect suddenly exited the van near Highland Park and attempted to flee on foot.

The individual climbed the center divider but was struck by a passing vehicle in the oncoming lane. Live audio captured Fernandez exclaiming in shock: “Whoa, wow! Oh my god! Oh no! Oh no!”

A producer quickly cut in, urging the camera crew to maintain a wide shot: “Stay wide, stay wide, he got hit.”

Back in the studio, Suh addressed the audience: “We just saw the person who was being pursued get out of their car and actually get hit by another speeding car.” Fernandez remained visibly shaken as the anchors processed the incident.

Aerial journalist Desmond Shaw had captured the moment, and a producer relayed his report: “That was so intense and so wild. The person tried to run along the median and it just – it didn’t work and, sadly, I don’t think this is going to end very well.”

Police later confirmed that the driver was pronounced dead. Authorities closed both directions of the 110 Freeway while investigators examined the scene, causing hours-long traffic delays on one of Los Angeles’ busiest highways.
