Virginia Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earle-Sears — who made history as the first Black woman ever elected statewide in the commonwealth and is now running for Governor — was subjected to verbal harassment while attending a James Madison University football game.
Sears, a proud Marine Corps veteran who served from 1983 to 1986 as a logistics officer, was reportedly enjoying the game when a man seated a few rows behind her began shouting hateful remarks. Witnesses say the man, described as a white liberal, yelled, “Go back to Haiti!” — despite Sears being Jamaican-born — and later called her a “traitor.”

The Lt. Governor later addressed the incident, pointing out the hypocrisy of those who claim tolerance while attacking those who hold different political beliefs.
“I thought Democrats were supposed to love everyone,” Sears said. “And just to be clear, I’m Jamaican. But I have nowhere to go back to — because America is my home.”
She continued, “I’ve been called names no one should ever hear, and I’ve watched people hold racist signs meant to shame me. And because I have an R next to my name, few care. But I am no victim.”

Sears concluded with determination about her ongoing campaign: “Words won’t break me, and they won’t stop this campaign. We are going to win.”
Lieutenant Governor Sears has been a strong supporter of President Donald Trump and his America First agenda, championing conservative values and individual freedom across Virginia.
