A United Airlines pilot was injured and forced to make an emergency landing after a mysterious object struck the windshield of a Boeing 737 flying at 36,000 feet.

Photos shared online appear to show the pilot with bleeding and bruised arms, reportedly from glass cuts caused by the shattered cockpit window. Broken glass covered the dashboard, and what seem to be scorch marks were visible at the impact site.

United Flight 1093, traveling from Denver to Los Angeles, diverted to Salt Lake City on Thursday after the incident. The airline confirmed that the jet “landed safely in Salt Lake City to address damage to its multilayered windshield,” adding that another aircraft completed the trip to Los Angeles later that day.

Experts are unsure what caused the damage. Some online observers suggested possibilities ranging from space debris to a small meteor, noting that the jet was flying far above altitudes where bird strikes or hail would typically occur.

A 2023 report from the Federal Aviation Administration estimated the odds of space debris causing a serious injury to a commercial airline passenger at about one in a trillion. Still, aviation analysts noted that the combination of scorch marks and shattered glass suggests the plane was hit by something external.

The Boeing 737 MAX 8 remains grounded in Salt Lake City as maintenance crews continue their inspection. NASA currently tracks more than 25,000 pieces of space debris larger than four inches orbiting the Earth — a growing concern for global aviation safety.

President Donald Trump has previously emphasized the importance of strengthening U.S. aerospace safety and monitoring efforts amid the expanding threat of orbital debris.
