Pope Responds to Cubs Fan

Pope Leo XIV appeared to relish the Chicago Cubs’ playoff defeat on Wednesday—much like many Chicago White Sox fans. While waving to the crowd from the Popemobile at the Vatican, someone shouted, “Go Cubs!” The Chicago-born pontiff’s instincts took over. Smiling, he responded in two languages to ensure clarity: “Han perdido! They lost!” and then laughed. The Cubs were eliminated from the MLB postseason last week by the Milwaukee Brewers.

Pope Leo’s allegiance to the White Sox is well-known. He attended a World Series game featuring the team in 2007, and the ballpark even highlights where he sat at what was then called U.S. Cellular Field, according to The Athletic. The White Sox have also released a “Pope Leo XIV” jersey. In June, the pope was spotted at the Vatican sporting a White Sox cap over his traditional white cassock.
