A woman in eastern France died in a tragic accident while cleaning her car, according to multiple French media reports cited by People.
Bernadette Delmotte, 60, was tidying her Fiat 500 on June 13 in the Saône-et-Loire region when investigators believe the vehicle began rolling backward. In an attempt to stop it, Delmotte reportedly leaned through the open window to pull the handbrake she had forgotten to set. During the effort, she accidentally triggered the automatic window switch, which closed on her neck.
“By the time she straightened up, the window stopped on her neck,” said a friend of the victim.
When Delmotte failed to arrive for a planned dinner and couldn’t be reached by phone, friends went to check on her. They discovered her trapped by the car window at her home. Authorities later confirmed she had died from asphyxiation and ruled the case an accident, finding no evidence of foul play.
According to The Mirror, a nearly identical incident occurred in Ukraine in 2021.
Delmotte’s brother, François, said the circumstances were initially hard to comprehend. “At first, even the police were confused,” he recalled. While he is not pursuing legal action against Fiat, he has written to the company in hopes that the tragedy will lead to safety improvements to prevent similar accidents in the future.
