Florida man with thermos inserted in body caught sneaking it into Polk County Jail: ‘Put it up the exit ramp’

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – A Florida man landed back in jail this week and became the subject of one of Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd’s most unusual “Morning Briefings” after attempting to smuggle a thermos into the facility—inside his own body.

The incident began when authorities received a report of a naked man at a local park.

“We got a call that he was naked inside a restroom at a public park, so we asked—was he naked or buck naked? You can be naked and still have your socks on, but if you’re buck naked, you’re totally nude,” Sheriff Judd said.

When a deputy arrived, Walter Frymire, 51, was fully clothed. The deputy escorted him from the park without making an arrest, giving him a break despite the initial complaint.

However, Frymire soon crossed the street and climbed onto a railroad track, committing another act of trespassing. At that point, the deputy arrested him. According to Sheriff Judd, Frymire has a long criminal history, including 25 prior arrests and five stints in state prison.

All arrestees undergo a body scanner to prevent contraband such as weapons or drugs from entering the jail. During this screening, deputies discovered Frymire had concealed a thermos in an extremely unusual way.

“That’s right, he put it up the exit ramp,” Sheriff Judd said, adding that Frymire admitted, “Well, I put that inside my body.” He had not swallowed it twenty-four hours earlier, the sheriff clarified.

Frymire was taken to a hospital, where a specialist safely removed the thermos—a step that Sheriff Judd believes likely saved his life. Frymire had even threatened the deputy for arresting him.

“He’s thermos-less in the county jail today,” Judd said.
