The State Department announced Wednesday that a U.S. diplomat has been dismissed after admitting to a romantic relationship with a Chinese woman alleged to have connections to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). The firing marks the first known enforcement of a policy banning such relationships, a rule first introduced in the final months of Joe Biden’s presidency.

That policy prohibits all American government personnel stationed in China — including family members and contractors with security clearances — from engaging in any romantic or sexual relationships with Chinese citizens.

According to State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott, the diplomat was removed from the foreign service after President Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio reviewed the case and determined that he had concealed his relationship with a Chinese national who was “known to have ties to the Chinese Communist Party.”

“Under Secretary Rubio’s leadership, we will maintain a zero-tolerance policy for any employee who compromises our national security,” Pigott said.

The diplomat’s identity has not been made public, but he and his Chinese girlfriend reportedly appeared in a secretly recorded video posted online by investigative journalist James O’Keefe.

In response, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun declined to comment on what he called an internal U.S. matter but added, “We oppose drawing lines based on ideology and maliciously smearing China.”
