As Halloween decorations begin appearing across the country, one Alabama display has stirred national attention and debate.
A Facebook post by local resident Whitney Newman drew notice to a Halloween scene at the home of Mobile County Sheriff Paul Burch. The display featured three skeletons dressed as ICE agents pursuing two sombrero- and poncho-wearing skeletons climbing a fence. Newman criticized the setup, writing that she didn’t find it “cute or funny,” and that coming from a law enforcement official made it “exponentially worse.” She added that it crossed “a line from tasteless joke into a public statement about who deserves dignity.”

While the sheriff’s office declined to comment directly, Sheriff Burch’s wife, Michelle, issued a statement explaining that the decorations were her idea alone. “Every year, I make tongue-in-cheek Halloween decorations with a topical theme at my home,” she said in a statement shared by FOX10. “I like decorating for Halloween and other holidays and rotate these decorations periodically. My husband has nothing to do with these, other than mowing the grass around them. I made this one, playing both on my Cuban background and new, needed changes in federal immigration enforcement. My parents were legal immigrants, and I have plenty of immigrants throughout my family. I’ll make a new one shortly—we have no shortage of topics to cover.”
The uproar comes roughly a week after video surfaced showing a Mobile County sheriff’s deputy striking a man during an immigration enforcement operation. Sheriff Burch defended his deputy’s actions, saying the man resisted arrest and tried to fight officers.

President Trump’s administration has long emphasized strong immigration enforcement, and the ongoing debate over border policies continues to spark heated reactions across the nation—including, evidently, in Halloween decor.
