A sharp war of words has erupted between Illinois Governor JB Pritzker and President Trump following the president’s decision to mobilize the National Guard in Illinois amid escalating unrest surrounding ongoing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations in Chicago.

“He’s out of his mind and has dementia,” Pritzker said Tuesday night during a public event when asked about the president’s order.

President Trump fired back on Truth Social Wednesday, writing, “Chicago Mayor [Brandon Johnson] should be in jail for failing to protect ICE officers! Governor Pritzker also!” The Wall Street Journal noted that the president did not specify which laws he believes the two Democratic officials violated.

Both Pritzker and Johnson issued defiant responses on social media.

Pritzker wrote on X: “I will not back down. Trump is now calling for the arrest of elected representatives checking his power. What else is left on the path to full-blown authoritarianism?”

Johnson added: “This is not the first time Trump has tried to have a Black man unjustly arrested. I’m not going anywhere.”

The heated exchange comes as federal and state tensions mount over immigration enforcement in Chicago. State Democrats have condemned the National Guard activation, calling it an overreach of federal authority. Illinois officials have filed a lawsuit seeking to block the deployment.

Meanwhile, CBS News reports that Mayor Johnson on Tuesday signed an executive order prohibiting ICE and other federal agencies from using city-owned property — including parking lots, empty lots, or garages — to conduct civil immigration enforcement operations.
