A 23-year-old Illinois man has been arrested for allegedly shooting his ex-girlfriend in a disturbing attempt to prove his feelings to a new romantic partner.

Jaquon L. Timothy was taken into custody over the weekend and charged with one count of aggravated battery with a firearm, according to the Peoria County State’s Attorney’s Office. Authorities say the July shooting was carried out to demonstrate Timothy’s affection for his current girlfriend.

On Saturday, July 19, around 1:30 a.m., officers from the Peoria Police Department responded to reports of gunfire in the 2300 block of West Starr Street in South Peoria. At the scene, they found a woman suffering from gunshot wounds to both feet. She was identified as Timothy’s ex-girlfriend and was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to Peoria Police spokesperson Semone Roth.

Investigators later interviewed Timothy’s current girlfriend, who told police that he had previously stated he would shoot his ex-girlfriend. After the incident, Timothy allegedly confirmed to her that he had followed through on that threat.

A search of Timothy’s cellphone, obtained via warrant, revealed a text message in which he allegedly admitted responsibility for the shooting.

Timothy was arrested on Thursday, Sept. 18, and appeared in court the following day, where Peoria County Judge Mark E. Gilles ordered him held without bond. A future court date has not yet been scheduled. If convicted, Timothy could face up to 30 years in prison.

Authorities are urging anyone with information related to the case to contact Peoria Police at 309-673-4521.

This is not Timothy’s first encounter with law enforcement. In 2022, he pleaded guilty in federal court to charges related to a gun store burglary, including conspiracy to steal firearms from a federally licensed dealer. He was sentenced to two years in prison followed by three years of supervised release. The charges stemmed from the 2020 theft of nine firearms.
