The fatal shooting of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk at a Utah college event on Wednesday has left lawmakers on edge, with many canceling or adjusting their public appearances due to safety concerns.

“People are scared to death in this building,” said Rep. Jared Moskowitz (D-Fla.), who had already increased his security and stopped holding outdoor events earlier this year. His actions reflect a growing trend on Capitol Hill.

According to NBC News and CBS News, multiple members of Congress have modified their schedules in response to the incident:

  • Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) is canceling all events for now.

  • Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) postponed two events in North Carolina scheduled for this weekend.

  • Rep. Jim Clyburn (D-S.C.) canceled some upcoming events but will still attend a church service.

  • Other lawmakers are moving public appearances indoors.

  • Sen. Ruben Gallego (D-Ariz.) postponed a planned town hall.

Sen. John Curtis (R-Utah) acknowledged the growing fear, saying, “I’m not gonna lie, I’m gonna think twice next time I’m in the major parade, just a few blocks away… I think all of us are going to be rethinking some things.”

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) said his office is reviewing security protocols after several representatives raised concerns.

Despite the heightened anxiety, some lawmakers are urging their colleagues not to retreat from public engagement. “That’s what these folks try to do—they try to scare you into inaction,” said Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.). “The last thing Charlie would want is for people to be quiet, whether you agree with him or not.”

Meanwhile, questions are being raised about the security measures in place at the event where Kirk was killed.
