ST. LOUIS (KMOV/Gray News) – A 54-year-old St. Louis man has been charged with first-degree murder following the fatal shooting of his roommate over the weekend.
Prosecutors identified the suspect as Marvin Byrd, who now faces multiple charges including first-degree murder, armed criminal action, unlawful possession of a firearm, and resisting arrest in connection with the incident.
According to court documents, the shooting occurred after Byrd and his roommate, 58-year-old Dwayne Thomas, attended a small gathering to watch a college football game. Authorities say Byrd became upset with Thomas for not bringing certain household items and drugs to the event.
Police allege that the argument escalated, leading Byrd to shoot Thomas on the street. Byrd reportedly remained at the scene and waited for officers to arrive.
When questioned, Byrd described the shooting as an “accident” and claimed that Thomas had been verbally “reckless.” He also told officers the act stemmed from a long period of built-up frustration.
Byrd was arrested at the scene and is currently being held without bond at the St. Louis City Justice Center.
Thomas was pronounced dead shortly after the shooting. His identity was confirmed by police on Sunday.
