I Spent My Vacation Fund on My Cat, and All I Got Was This Guilt Trip
DEAR ABBY: I have a well-paying job, a solid savings account, and a life I enjoy. I also have a beloved cat who recently survived being hit by a car. Thankfully, he’s young and his injuries were treatable — but the veterinary care, including surgery and emergency services, came with a hefty price tag (well into the five figures).
Without hesitation, I used my vacation fund — which I had been saving for several years — to cover his care. I consider it money well spent. However, I made the mistake of mentioning the cost to a friend, and now she won’t let it go. She keeps making comments about how I “wasted” the money or how it could have been used for something more “worthy.”
How can I politely tell her that how I spend my money — whether it’s on a cat, a trip, or anything else — is my decision? I’d prefer not to snap and say, “It’s none of your business,” but I do want to set a clear boundary.
