Minneapolis City Councilmember Jeremiah Ellison, son of Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, is under scrutiny after announcing he will retain his six-figure council salary while participating in a paid fellowship at Harvard University.

Ellison, who earns approximately $110,000 annually from his council position, confirmed that he plans to travel between Massachusetts and Minneapolis to attend some meetings. However, fellow council members have expressed concern over his ability to fulfill the full responsibilities of his elected role while based out of state.

Councilmember LaTrisha Vetaw voiced frustration, citing the lack of North Minneapolis representation in committee meetings if Ellison is frequently absent. “Without Councilmember Ellison sitting on those committees, we have zero North Minneapolis representation. That’s not acceptable,” she said during a recent press conference.

Minneapolis City Council rules require members to be physically present to vote and participate in meetings, raising questions about how Ellison will balance both roles.

The move has sparked debate over accountability and representation, and could have implications for Ellison’s political future.
