Yummy Potato Smashers

Crispy Parmesan Potato Waffle (Waffle‑Iron Smashers)

A ridiculously simple, ridiculously satisfying recipe that turns a cooked gold potato into a crunchy, cheesy waffle you can top any way you like. It’s fast, cheap, and perfect for breakfast, lunch, or a snack.

You take a cooked potato, smash it in a waffle maker with parmesan, let it crisp until golden, then finish with sour cream and herbs. It’s like a cross between a smashed potato, a hash brown, and a waffle — but easier than all three.

🥔 Ingredients

  • 1 cooked gold potato (boiled or baked; skin on)
  • ½–1 cup shredded parmesan
  • Butter spray or melted butter
  • 1–2 tbsp sour cream
  • Chopped green onion, chives, or parsley

Optional add‑ins (all simple, all delicious)

  • Garlic powder
  • Onion powder
  • Smoked paprika
  • Black pepper
  • Crushed red pepper (if you want heat)
  • Shredded cheddar (mix with parmesan for extra melt)
  • Everything bagel seasoning
  • Bacon bits
  • Fresh thyme or rosemary

🔧 Equipment

  • Standard waffle maker
  • Butter spray or brush

👣 Step‑by‑Step Instructions

1. Preheat the waffle maker

Let it get fully hot — this is what gives you the crispy edges.

2. Butter the plates

Spray with butter or brush on melted butter. This helps the parmesan crisp instead of sticking.

3. Add a layer of parmesan

Sprinkle a thin, even layer directly onto the waffle plates. This becomes the crunchy cheese crust.

4. Place the cooked potato in the center

A medium gold potato works best. Leave the skin on — it adds texture.

5. Season the potato

Sprinkle salt, pepper, garlic powder, or any optional seasonings you like.

6. Add more parmesan on top

This locks the potato into the waffle shape and gives you that golden crust.

7. Close the waffle maker and press

Push down firmly to smash the potato outward. Let it cook 5–8 minutes, depending on your waffle maker. You want deep golden brown edges and crisp cheese.

8. Remove carefully

Use a silicone spatula — the cheese crust is delicate when hot.

9. Top and serve

Add a dollop of sour cream and sprinkle with chopped greens. Eat immediately while it’s crunchy.

🔥 Tips for Maximum Crisp

  • Use gold potatoes — they smash perfectly and crisp evenly.
  • Don’t overload with cheese; thin layers crisp better.
  • Let the waffle cook longer than you think — the cheese needs time to brown.
  • If you want extra crunch, add a sprinkle of parmesan after cooking and let it melt on top.

You’re welcome!
