Chicago mother knocked out by career criminal in random attack — as Trump prepares to send in National Guard

A suburban Chicago woman was violently assaulted near Union Station in downtown Chicago on August 19, in what authorities say was a random attack by a repeat offender. The incident comes as former President Donald Trump signals plans to deploy the National Guard to the city in response to ongoing concerns about violent crime.

Kathleen Miles, a resident of Lake Villa, Illinois, was walking with a co-worker after her shift when a man allegedly forced his way between them and struck her in the face without warning. The assault left her with multiple facial fractures, a concussion, and a black eye.

“She said, ‘This man came in between the two of us, shoved us apart, and then hit me in the face,’” Miles recounted her co-worker telling her, in an interview with ABC 7 Chicago.

Miles said she has no memory of the incident and only regained consciousness in the hospital.

Livingston was arrested and charged with three aggravated battery charges, causing great bodily harm and reckless conduct.

“I woke up, and my co-worker was standing above me, saying, ‘You’re OK. You’re in the hospital. You’ve been assaulted,’” Miles recalled. She then lost consciousness again before waking up to her daughter at her bedside.

Police arrested 32-year-old William Livingston in connection with the attack. Livingston has a lengthy criminal history, including at least 17 arrests since 2014, many for battery and aggravated assault against women and law enforcement. He now faces three charges of aggravated battery causing great bodily harm and reckless conduct.

Miles expressed frustration with the city’s criminal justice policies and leaders, saying Livingston should not have been free to walk the streets.

Miles shows off her eye injury after weeks after the attack.

“It’s 2025, and he’s out. And if he had been held accountable for his actions, then I wouldn’t be sitting here with injuries,” she said.

The attack occurred amid an ongoing surge in violent crime in Chicago. Over the recent Labor Day weekend, 58 people were shot, and eight were killed.

In response to rising violence, former President Trump has renewed his call for federal intervention in Chicago. Speaking from the Oval Office, Trump announced plans to send the National Guard, though no timeline has been provided.

Miles ripped into the policies and politicians of the Democratic-run city for allowing Livingston to continue to walk the streets.

“We’re going in,” Trump said. “I didn’t say when.”

He also suggested that Illinois Governor JB Pritzker could initiate the deployment, but added, “Now, we’re going to do it anyway. We have the right to do it.”
