Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping reinforced their growing alliance on Tuesday during a summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in China, projecting a message of unity to the world—and, implicitly, to the United States.

Putin, attending the summit alongside leaders from the 10-nation bloc, referred to Xi as his “dear friend” and said relations between Russia and China had reached “the highest level in history,” according to NBC News. Xi echoed the sentiment, saying that the two countries’ partnership had “withstood the test of a changing international situation” and served as a model for global diplomacy, as reported by the New York Times.

Adding to the symbolism of the gathering, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un arrived in China by train on Tuesday. Reuters described the summit as a display of unity among nations increasingly isolated by the West over their roles in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine—the largest war in Europe in 80 years.

The show of solidarity came a day after Xi criticized what he called “bullying practices” by unnamed countries, a remark widely interpreted as a swipe at U.S. foreign policy under  President Donald Trump, according to Politico.

Also on Monday, Putin, Xi, and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi appeared together in a group photo, further reinforcing a narrative of alignment among major non-Western powers.

Xi is set to host a large-scale military parade on Wednesday to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, an event expected to underscore China’s historical narrative and its growing geopolitical influence.
