New Neighbor Asks to Share Laundry and Backyard, Says Landlord Sent Her. He Says He Didn’t.
After six years in the same first-floor apartment, a woman and her fiancé got an unexpected request from their new upstairs neighbor: Could she and her boyfriend come through their apartment to do laundry and use the backyard?
The neighbor even proposed a laundry schedule to keep from disrupting the couple’s routine. According to the woman, who shared the story on Reddit, the neighbor said she’d already spoken with the landlord. He had supposedly told her to ask the couple and suggested it would be fine.
The longtime tenant said no. Her apartment came with private access to the basement and backyard, and she said she and her fiancé paid nearly three times what the upstairs tenants paid. She didn’t want people she barely knew coming through while they worked. She also had a cat to think about: One door left open could mean an afternoon spent looking for her.
She told the neighbor she might feel differently once they got to know each other. Then she checked with the landlord.
According to her Reddit post, he said the neighbor had never asked him about sharing the laundry or backyard. He added that if she had, he would have said no.
That could have been the end of it. Instead, the woman said, she later overheard her neighbor standing outside their door, complaining on the phone that the couple wasn’t being neighborly. The neighbor apparently believed the yard was communal when she signed her lease. The longtime tenant said the yard was visible from upstairs but wasn’t advertised as part of the rental.
Most commenters sided with the couple. Some said the landlord’s account would have made them even less inclined to hand over access. Others suggested keeping him informed if the complaints continued. One commenter put it more simply: “You are not a laundromat.”
What’s the most unreasonable thing a neighbor ever asked of you?
