Slew of Arrests For Newly Elected Democrats Across the Country, Some Could Face Years in Jail

First came the blue wave. Now comes the blue crime wave.

In more evidence that Democrats are still going to Democrat, no matter what the circumstances, no less than three Democrats who won their elections as part of Tuesday’s midterm sweep have been either criminally charged since their victories or had their legal troubles more widely reported on.

Most prominent is U.S. Rep.-elect Lakesha Womack of North Carolina, who upset GOP Rep. Tim Moore in the state’s 14th District.

WJZY-TV called her 7,000-vote victory “one of North Carolina’s biggest upsets in Tuesday’s midterm election.”

“Womack said her progressive campaign, which focused heavily on affordability issues and lowering health care costs, resonated with voters across the uniquely drawn district,” the station reported.

Womack said that “when people look at what’s happening in Washington, D.C. right now, all they see is chaos and corruption and incompetence.”

“At the same time, we’re facing rising health care costs, and gas is costing more and groceries are costing more,” she added.

Well, let’s hope she also believes in progressive criminal justice reform, because prosecutors said she was involved in some criminality of her own.

As the New York Post reported, Womack is facing a felony car theft charge stemming from a 2019 incident in which she allegedly failed to return a rental car.

She’s scheduled in court on Nov. 10.

From The Charlotte Observer:

Womack faces a Class H felony charge stemming from an allegedly unreturned rental car valued at approximately $20,000 in 2019. A criminal summons was issued in January 2020 but returned unserved the following month. Authorities eventually served Womack at a campaign event in Polk County on Oct. 11, 2026.

Moore’s campaign repeatedly highlighted the charge in advertisements leading up to the election. Womack pushed back, accusing the campaign of exploiting an unresolved legal matter to attack her character. She did not respond Wednesday to additional questions about whether her attorneys have discussed a possible resolution with prosecutors or whether she would continue serving in Congress if convicted…

Under current U.S. House rules, members formally charged with felonies carrying potential prison sentences of at least two years are expected to step aside from committee assignments and party leadership positions. Members convicted of qualifying offenses are also expected to refrain from voting on legislation or participating in committee business.

The Charlotte Observer also noted that “Womack has previously said she was experiencing homelessness around the time of the alleged offense, though she has not explained how those circumstances relate to the rental-car dispute.”

The case can carry a sentence of more than two years, depending on the defendant’s criminal history and other factors — which would mean that she’d be without a committee assignment in the 120th Congress if the Democrats decide to follow the House rules.

Don’t be surprised if they don’t. In fact, be surprised if they do.

Meanwhile, Missouri state Rep. Anthony Ealy is facing charges for apparently getting a little wild after his re-election. From NewsNation:

According to the incident report, just before 11:30 a.m., police were called to an apartment in Jefferson City, Missouri, after it was reported that Ealy had trespassed and threatened a woman and her husband.

The report says Ealy threatened the woman’s husband – saying something about a gun then telling him “I’m going to kill you.” The Jefferson City Police Department said multiple witnesses reported a man yelling and causing a scene outside a nearby business.

Wonderful. That was Wednesday — and, according to the report, he’d done the same thing the previous night. As in, Election Day.

Ealy, a licensed attorney and managing partner of his own firm, is now charged with fourth-degree assault and disturbing the peace.

As of Friday, he was still being held without bond.

It’s worth noting that at least Ealy had been asked by the Democrats not to run for reelection after he was removed from his committee assignments over what were called personal matters he was in the process of addressing.

That didn’t stop him from announcing a reelection bid. Apparently, the Democrats didn’t want to officially challenge someone who wasn’t in compos mentis. This sounds familiar…
