Most drivers passing the Jennings County Courthouse use the street.

One woman took a different route Monday afternoon, steering onto the lawn and making repeated circles through the grass, at times in reverse, while courthouse surveillance cameras captured it from above.

Jennings County jail records identify the driver as 67-year-old Lorraine Phyllis Wilkerson of North Vernon. The Jennings County Sheriff’s Department said she was arrested Oct. 5 for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated following the incident at the courthouse.

The surveillance footage, recorded shortly before 5 p.m., shows the car carving through the lawn, kicking up dirt, knocking down a sign and leaving tire marks across the grass.

The Courthouse Cameras Had a Clear View

The video begins with the sedan already on the courthouse lawn, swinging around a large tree and throwing dirt into the air as it circles through the grass.

The car keeps looping through the same area, at times traveling in reverse as it passes between trees, light posts, a bench, and the walkway in front of the courthouse.

During one pass, the car takes out a sign and keeps moving.

Each trip around the lawn churns up more dirt. Dark tire marks are left across the grass as the driver continues making tight circles through the courthouse grounds.

The sheriff’s department introduced the footage as “A Friendly Reminder.”

“If you’ve had a few too many margaritas with dinner, please don’t get behind the wheel, and definitely don’t do donuts on the courthouse lawn,” the department wrote.

“We encourage everyone to enjoy themselves responsibly and always make arrangements for a safe ride home if you’ve been drinking.”

No injuries were reported.

Two Misdemeanor Charges Followed

Wilkerson was booked into the Jennings County jail Oct. 5. The Madison Courier also identified her as a 67-year-old North Vernon resident.

Her booking record lists one count of operating a vehicle with an alcohol concentration equivalent of .08 or more under Indiana Code 9-30-5-1(a) and one count of operating a vehicle while intoxicated under Indiana Code 9-30-5-2(a).

Both are listed as Class C misdemeanors with an offense date of Oct. 5.

The jail record lists a $905 cash bond and no holds. At the time the record was reviewed, no court case or next hearing had been assigned.

The sheriff’s department said Wilkerson was arrested for operating while intoxicated “along with numerous other charges.” The current jail record, however, shows only the two alcohol-related driving charges.
