Trump Administration Boots 760,000 Questionable Obamacare Enrollees in Major Fraud Crackdown
The Trump administration says it has removed roughly 760,000 people from Obamacare exchange plans after a federal review found problems ranging from unverified citizenship or immigration status to suspicious and possibly fraudulent enrollments.
Good.
Not “controversial.” Not “cruel.” Good.
For years, Washington has treated federal health-care subsidies like Monopoly money, spraying taxpayer cash into massive programs and then acting shocked when fraud shows up. This time, the administration actually checked the books.
According to federal officials, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services canceled about 315,000 Affordable Care Act policies in August, affecting about 760,000 people, after enrollees failed to verify citizenship, immigration status, or other eligibility requirements. The administration says the move could save taxpayers roughly $2.2 billion in improper subsidy payments. Reuters
The cleanup effort is part of a broader anti-fraud push led by Vice President JD Vance’s task force, which has been looking into improper federal benefit payments. Officials also suspended new registrations for hundreds of insurance brokers accused of submitting questionable applications, including cases lacking basic identification information such as Social Security numbers. The Associated Press reported that the administration plans to remove 760,000 individuals from ACA exchanges over fraud claims, with officials arguing that subsidies must go only to people who are legally eligible and actually exist. AP
That last part should not be complicated.
If someone is eligible, fine. If someone is not eligible, the taxpayer should not be forced to pay. If a broker is gaming the system by cranking out suspicious enrollments, that broker should be shut down. If applications are missing key identifying information, the government should not simply shrug and send the bill to working Americans.
Critics will say this is another Trump attack on health care. What it really looks like is an attack on fraud, waste, and the political class’s favorite accounting trick: pretending every dollar spent by Washington is automatically compassionate.
Fraud is not health care. Fake enrollment is not coverage. Improper subsidies are not kindness. They are theft with paperwork.
The ACA has already been under pressure from rising premiums and the expiration of pandemic-era subsidy expansions. That makes it even more important that the money still in the system go to legitimate enrollees, not ghosts, duplicate claims, ineligible applicants, or whatever else slipped through the bureaucratic net.
For once, somebody in Washington appears to be asking the basic question every household already understands:
Who is getting the money, and are they supposed to be getting it?
That is not extremism. That is management.
If the Trump administration saves billions by kicking fraudsters and ineligible enrollees off the taxpayer tab, that is not a scandal. That is exactly what government is supposed to do before asking Americans for another dime.
