San Antonio man accused of using AI program to plan mass shooting at elementary school

Records show Nathaniel Michael Carrasco, 22, was arrested Aug. 29 and charged with making a terroristic threat, which is considered a third-degree felony. A judge set his bond at $250,000.
According to Carrasco’s arrest warrant, he is accused of using Anthropic AI — an artificial intelligence program — to make “multiple queries threatening to kill school-age kids from Serna Elementary School.”
‘I’m getting a gun as soon as I can’
Investigators said Carrasco allegedly typed several threatening prompts into the AI program Aug. 11.
While Carrasco is accused of using the program to plan the attack on that date, police said the threats were not known to the FBI, SAPD or the Southwest Texas Fusion Center until Aug. 28.
In one alleged chat with the AI program, Carrasco wrote that he wanted to get “a gun as soon as I can,” so he could “walk” into Serna Elementary School “and start shooting up kids.”
“I will do everything in my power to help create that reality,” Carrasco allegedly wrote in another chat with AI. “There shall be no escape, no matter what.”
Detectives said Carrasco also asked the program to search for “dead school kids.” He also didn’t want the AI program to talk him out of planning the attack, according to the affidavit.
“I hope I can get a gun so that way, I can just shoot up a fucking school already,” the warrant states, quoting Carrasco.
The FBI and the Southwest Texas Fusion Center identified Carrasco as the suspect through emergency requests filed with his cellphone company, internet service and IP address, SAPD said.
North East ISD’s response
Tuesday morning a North East ISD spokesperson said SAPD informed the district Sunday of “an individual who had made a general threat to ‘a school.’”
“They (SAPD) informed us that the individual (Carrasco) lived in the vicinity of Serna Elementary School. But a specific school had not been named as a target of the threat, according to the information that SAPD provided to us,” the spokesperson said.
As a precaution, North East ISD deployed district police officers Monday at Serna Elementary School as well as members of the district’s safety and security team.
“Unfortunately, it was not until the arrest (of Carrasco) that we learned we had been given incomplete information and that Serna (Elementary School) had been mentioned specifically,” a North East ISD spokesperson said.
KSAT reached out to SAPD for a response to North East ISD’s statement. This story will be updated with the department’s response.
Carrasco is expected back in court for a pre-indictment hearing Dec. 15, court records show.
