A Colorado teenager discovered the hard way that abandoned Cold War missile silos are not ideal places for a late-night adventure.

An 18-year-old woman had to be rescued after becoming trapped inside a decommissioned missile silo in eastern Colorado during an early-morning outing with two other teenagers. According to reports, the group entered the site around 3 a.m., which is already the sort of detail that usually leads to a poor outcome.

At some point, the young woman became stuck inside the structure while the other two managed to get out. Realizing they were no longer dealing with a fun little trespassing story and had moved into full-scale disaster territory, the teens called 911.

Emergency crews responded and found that the woman could not simply climb out on her own. Firefighters eventually used a rope system to pull her to safety from inside the old missile facility.

Remarkably, she survived the ordeal.

Authorities did not describe the entire trip as a brilliant idea, which was probably unnecessary because the facts spoke for themselves. America spent the Cold War building missile silos to withstand unimaginable catastrophe, not to serve as a hangout spot for teenagers looking for something “cool” to explore after midnight.

Still, there is something almost impressively old-school about the whole episode.

Most teenagers today get into trouble through apps, social media, or ill-advised videos. This group somehow managed to create a problem that sounds like it came from a 1980s thriller: three teens, an abandoned missile base, darkness, confusion, and a rescue operation before sunrise.

In the end, the story could have turned out much worse.

The woman was brought out alive, emergency crews did their job, and the other two teenagers learned an important life lesson: if a place was once designed to store weapons of mass destruction, it may not be the best venue for recreational exploring.

There are easier ways to make memories.

For example, bowling. Or mini-golf. Or literally anything that does not require firefighters to haul you out of a Cold War ruin with ropes.
