Graham had recently returned from a trip to Ukraine and was scheduled to appear on NBC’s Meet the Press on Sunday morning, according to the network.
He had represented South Carolina in the U.S. Senate since 2003 and sought the Republican presidential nomination during the 2016 election cycle.
Following reports of his death, President Trump described Graham as “one of the greatest people and senators I have ever known.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he was “deeply saddened” by the news, calling Graham “a true defender of freedom and the values that make our world safer.”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also paid tribute, saying, “Israel has lost one of its greatest friends. America has lost a great patriot. I have lost a beloved friend.”
Throughout his Senate career, Graham was a vocal supporter of Israel and Ukraine and a strong critic of Iran.
His official website described him as “a conservative problem-solver and one of the strongest proponents of a robust national defense,” noting that he consistently advocated for policies aimed at protecting America’s long-term national security interests in the fight against terrorism.
