‘Weird Al’ Turns Down Big Payday Rather Than Become AI’s Cheerleader
There are still a few people in Hollywood who apparently believe the words “No thanks” can be spoken even after someone waves a large pile of cash in their face.
“Weird Al” Yankovic appears to be one of them.
The legendary parody musician recently revealed that he walked away from what he described as a “nice pile of money” after discovering a commercial he had agreed to film wasn’t really for ordinary business software after all.
It was for artificial intelligence.
According to Yankovic, he had originally been told the commercial was promoting software designed to improve workplace productivity. Only shortly before filming did he learn the real product centered on AI.
That was enough for him.
“Oh no, I can’t be the poster boy for AI,” Yankovic said. “Forget it.”
He admitted he felt bad about backing out at the last minute but said he simply wasn’t comfortable lending his name and reputation to something he doesn’t support.
In an era where celebrities will endorse almost anything with a marketing budget—including cryptocurrency exchanges, miracle supplements, online gambling, and whatever today’s latest Silicon Valley buzzword happens to be—Yankovic’s decision stands out as almost… quaint.
Imagine that.
Someone turning down a large paycheck because of a personal principle.
Historians say such events were once fairly common.
Yankovic has been openly skeptical of the rapidly expanding AI industry, particularly its growing use in creative fields where artists, musicians and writers worry that computers are increasingly replacing the very people who create the original work.
Whether AI ultimately transforms society or simply becomes another overhyped technology remains to be seen.
But at least one celebrity decided there was a limit to how much money it would take to become the smiling face on the billboard.
Apparently, “Weird Al” still thinks there’s something more valuable than a nice pile of cash.
