A woman from Texas is recovering from serious injuries after she said a group of black women jumped her in a bloody attack.

Why did the attack happen? Standing by Karmelo Anthony sparked it.

A woman posted online about what happened that night. Walking with a friend toward her car, someone stepped up to them unexpectedly. It came out of nowhere – they had just left a bar where they’d been having drinks. A cluster of unfamiliar faces moved in close while the sidewalk stayed quiet around them

A knife found its mark that evening, cutting short the life of seventeen-year-old Austin Metcalf during a crowded high school track event. Anthony stood trial, later hearing the jury’s decision – guilty of murder.

Thirty-five years behind bars became his fate. Voices rose afterward, some firm in support, others questioning what justice truly means. Sharp divisions formed fast, spreading through conversations online and on street corners alike.

On Monday, a group of civil rights and criminal defense attorneys announced they were going to join Anthony’s fight to appeal his conviction.

A fresh group of lawyers now works for him, with Ben Crump’s firm among them.

A girl from Longview called the assault sudden, with no warning at all. In her message online, she made clear she hadn’t spoken to those girls – hadn’t even locked eyes.

From the start, they were strangers to her. Nothing had passed between them before that moment.

Later that day, she mentioned online how the Anthony situation wasn’t connected to her at all – still, the attack left bruises, a gash sealed with staples, and blood soaking through clothing. Though unrelated, it hurt just the same.

A call from Wolf News Digital reached the father, whose daughter remains rattled by what took place. She believes people should hear her story, he explained, pointing to her message online. The words there matter, according to him, because silence would hide too much.

The investigation is ongoing.
