Congressional candidate Darializa Avila Chevalier is facing scrutiny from FIFA over an unauthorized World Cup ticket raffle, according to reports. Chevalier, who previously led Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s campaign in the Bronx and Upper Manhattan, announced the raffle as an incentive for volunteers supporting her bid to represent New York’s 13th Congressional District, which includes Harlem.

On Wednesday, she shared on X (formerly Twitter) that New Yorkers could win Category 1 tickets to England’s match against Panama on June 27 by participating in at least 10 canvassing shifts. Each shift would reportedly earn participants a trading card, with full collection granting automatic entry into the raffle, which ends June 22. It remains unclear whether each shift offers a different card.

FIFA has since stated it did not authorize the promotion and is taking action against the unapproved lottery. The organization’s rules explicitly prohibit using tournament tickets in raffles, sweepstakes, or similar promotional efforts, according to the New York Post’s Craig McCarthy. Both Chevalier’s office and FIFA have been approached for comment by the Daily Mail.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has thrown his support behind Chevalier

Mamdani, who endorsed Chevalier, recently ran a similar initiative, offering a limited number of World Cup tickets at MetLife Stadium for $50.

However, he faced criticism after attending the Brazil vs. Morocco game in New Jersey, amid claims he secured multiple high-value tickets typically beyond public reach. His spokesperson, Dora Pekec, defended the attendance, stating Mamdani has a contractual obligation with the New York/New Jersey 2026 World Cup Host Committee and attends matches in his official capacity as host city executive.

Chevalier stirred additional controversy earlier this week when she revealed on PIX 11, a NYC television station, that she was supporting Senegal instead of the U.S. team—contrasting with her opponent, Rep. Adriano Espaillat, who said he was rooting for Mexico.

Her campaign has also drawn backlash over past social media content. In 2019, under the now-inactive X account @darializabonet, she posted inflammatory remarks, including criticism of interracial relationships. One post read: “black men and Arab men fetishizing ugly colonizer women.” Another recounted an encounter at Popeyes where an older White woman questioned her pro-BDS (Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions) shirt. “Her: Do you know what they do to– Door closed before I could find out what they do,” she wrote.

During her time at Columbia University from 2012 to 2016, Chevalier was active in Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP), a group later suspended. She identified herself as a leader of the “tentefada” campus encampments. Her congressional platform includes legalizing sex work and personal drug use, eliminating prisons, disbanding Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and ending U.S. military aid to Israel, as outlined in her Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) candidate questionnaire.
