A recent survey highlights growing concerns among teachers about how artificial intelligence is affecting student learning. According to findings released Friday by Ipsos and NPR, 54% of K–12 educators believe AI is undermining students’ ability to develop critical thinking skills. The survey, conducted from April 27 to May 5 with a representative group of teachers, also found that 40% view AI’s overall impact on education as negative, compared to just 9% who see it as beneficial. Furthermore, more than half—57%—reported that AI complicates their efforts to accurately assess student understanding, while 59% said it has weakened trust in their relationships with students.
Although 78 percent of teachers surveyed said they think students should learn how to use AI responsibly, more than half—52 percent—reported that their schools haven’t provided clear guidelines on the topic.
At the same time, 69 percent of those teachers indicated that AI has improved their efficiency, according to IPSOS.
In a May 13 report, The New York Times cited Stanford’s Educational Opportunity Project, which found that reading scores dropped in 83 percent of school districts with available data when comparing 2025 to 2015. Math scores reportedly fell in 70 percent of those districts over the same period.
Last October, the Associated Press reported that Anthropic, Microsoft, and OpenAI donated millions of dollars to teachers unions to support AI training initiatives.
Meanwhile, Goldman Sachs projected on June 3 that major technology companies are expected to spend around $5.3 trillion on AI between fiscal years 2025 and 2030.
